This image is considered the only real specimen of a note written by the devil, and it is contained in a book called The Devil in Britain and America, penned by John Ashton in 1896.
According to the author, the devil was contacted by a man named Ludovico Spoletano via conjuring, and asked to write an answer to a question posed. An invisible power then took over the author’s pen and rapidly scrawled the diabolic note pictured above.
Apparently, no one can yet decipher the letter; it contains no known language, which seems a bit odd. Surely the devil would wish to have his say in a language we can read!
AMHARIC, THE PRIMEVAL LANGUAGE OF EDEN!
Author Ashton put the brakes on the unknown language idea, because he stated that, “according to legend, Amharic (which some of the symbols may represent) was the primeval language spoken in Eden.”
Ashton’s answer leads to the question: should the letter be read from left to right, or from right to left? That’s only a small start towards the note’s decryption, and, so far, no one has been able to crack the devil’s code in this letter or to convince us of a hoax.
MARIA TOMASI’S NOTE FROM SATAN
Maria Tomasi was a bit of a hoax herself, as she was a nun, but told others she was possessed by the devil!
Maria was born Isabella Tomasi , somewhere in Italy in 1645. She was the daughter of Prince Giuilo Tomasi di Lampedusa. The Tomasi family were the ancestors of author Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, known for his book “The Leopard.” When Isabella was 15 years old, she became a nun, a sister at the Benediction convent in Palme di Mantechiaro in Sicily, Italy.
Maria became Maria Crocifissa with a new identity as a nun. Nuns are asked to shed their previous lives and their sins by the symbolic taking of a new name. However, Maria believed that the devil was always nudging her, attempting with various wiles to get her to renounce God. She was terrified that the devil would somehow force her to sin against her will! When she came near the convent alter, other nuns said she would scream as if possessed, writhe and drop to the floor. Maria told the nuns she could hear the voice of the devil whispering to her.
PROSTRATE WITH A NOTE IN HER HAND
On August 11, 1676, Maria was found crumpled to the floor of her convent room. Her face was blackened with ink and she held an ink-smeared letter in her hand. When confronted about her behavior, she appeared to slowly regain composure from a trance state. She claimed the devil had written the letter she held. When inspected, the note seemed an illegible mix of occult symbols, primeval glyphs and ancient Latin, Greek and Arabic letters.
A dark and cryptic epistle indeed! Did the devil possess a nun and force her to scrawl a terrible message while prostrate on the cold floor of her convent cell?
That’s a good question, and, considering what we now know about schizophrenic scripts and their undecipherable metamorphoses, the note could indeed be related to mental illness.
According to Psychology Today, ‘embellishment of senseless texts with phantasmagorical drawings rather than illustrations or endless variations of the same fundamental form, sometimes referred to as metamorphoses, are also common (to schizophrenic writing.)
However, the descriptions above do not quite cover the content of Maria’s letter from the devil. The note is not ‘senseless’ at all.
ENTER THE DARK WEB
Appropriately enough, software on the dark web was used to crack the devil’s code in this instance. Software, created by the military and used by different governments across the globe, was applied to the letter. The cryptic message was deciphered after 400 years of mystery.
WHAT DID THE DEVIL HAVE TO SAY?
The letter describes the relationship between humans, God and Satan in rambling, stream-of-consciousness style.
Satan declared in the note:
Humans are responsible for the creation of God.
This system works for no one.
God thinks he can free mortals.
Perhaps now, Styx is certain.
God and Jesus are dead weights.
Interpreted perhaps, that God is an invention tooled by humans suffering bondage to life on earth; and that the river Styx, i.e. death, where the Greeks believed the souls of the dead were ferried to the underworld, is inevitable, in spite of faith in ‘dead weights.’
The note is a mockery, which Satan has been accused of multiple times.
On the other hand, it could be the writing of a deranged mind, as Maria was known to be frightened of voices and terrified of the whispers taking over her life. Ludum Science Center director Daniele Abete, after inspecting Sister Maria’s letter says this:
“I personally believe that the nun had a good command of languages, which allowed her to invent the code, and may have suffered from a condition like schizophrenia, which made her imagine dialogues with the Devil.”
And yet, Abete reports: “We primed the software with Ancient Greek, Arabic, the Runic alphabet and Latin to de-scramble some of the letter and showed that it really is devilish.”
Are accusing voices and spirit dictation always due to mental illness? Or, can they be, at times, something other; a phenomenon the hapless recipient endures without the understanding of family or psychiatrists?
